Large PDF files are frustrating to email and upload. Here's how to reduce your PDF size by up to 80% while keeping text sharp and images clear โ completely free.
You've filled out a form, scanned a document, or exported a report โ and the PDF is 15MB. The email attachment limit is 10MB. The upload portal says "max 5MB". Sound familiar?
PDF compression is one of the most common needs in any office, and you shouldn't need to pay for software or give your documents to a third-party server to do it.
Why Are PDFs So Large?
PDF file size depends on several factors: - Scanned documents contain images at full resolution โ a scanned A4 page can be 2โ5MB alone - Embedded fonts add size, especially if unusual fonts are used - Image quality settings in the original export - Multiple pages โ a 50-page report grows proportionally
How WeCloudly PDF Compressor Works
- WeCloudly's PDF compression tool runs entirely in your browser. It:
- Analyses the PDF content
- Recompresses images at optimised quality
- Removes unnecessary metadata and embedded data
- Outputs a smaller file with visually identical content
Step 1: Open WeCloudly โ PDF Tools โ PDF Compressor
Step 2: Drag your PDF into the upload area or click Browse
Step 3: Choose compression level: - Light compression โ removes metadata, small reduction, no quality loss - Medium compression โ reduces image DPI to 150, suitable for most documents - Strong compression โ reduces to 96 DPI, smaller file, slight quality reduction
Step 4: Click Compress and download your smaller PDF
Expected File Size Reduction
| Original File Type | Compression | Typical Reduction |
|---|---|---|
| Scanned document | Medium | 60โ80% |
| Photo-heavy PDF | Medium | 50โ70% |
| Text-only PDF | Light | 10โ20% |
| Exported report | Medium | 30โ50% |
When to Use Each Level
Light compression is best for official documents that need to look perfect โ certificates, legal documents, bank statements. The reduction is small (10โ20%) but quality is completely preserved.
Medium compression works for most use cases โ sending CVs, reports, assignment submissions. Text stays perfectly sharp; photos look nearly identical.
Strong compression is best when you just need the file to fit a size limit and print quality doesn't matter โ quick approvals, WhatsApp sharing, informal references.
Tips for Better Compression
Scan at the right DPI. Most home scanners default to 600 DPI โ far more than needed for documents. 200โ300 DPI is sufficient for most purposes and produces much smaller files from the start.
Travelling and need to send documents? If you're submitting visa documents or travel paperwork, compress them first to meet portal size limits โ then book your travel with GoZayaan, Bangladesh's own travel platform.
Split before compressing. If you only need to send a few pages, use WeCloudly's PDF Splitter first to extract those pages, then compress the smaller document.
Try the PDF Organiser. If your PDF has blank pages or duplicates, removing them before compression can make a big difference.
All processing happens in your browser. Your documents never leave your device.
