Zakat (যাকাত) is one of the five pillars of Islam and a religious obligation for every Muslim who possesses wealth above a certain threshold (Nisab) for a full lunar year. Calculating Zakat correctly is important — this guide explains exactly how to do it for Bangladeshi Muslims in 2026.

What Is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must have before Zakat becomes obligatory. It is calculated based on either:

  • **Gold Nisab:** 87.48 grams of gold
  • **Silver Nisab:** 612.36 grams of silver

Most Islamic scholars recommend using the silver Nisab as it is lower and ensures more Muslims fulfil their obligation. In Bangladesh, with silver at approximately ৳140 per gram, the Nisab is approximately ৳85,730.

This means: if your total eligible wealth exceeds ৳85,730 and has done so for a full lunar year, Zakat is due.

Zakat Rate

Zakat is always 2.5% of your total eligible wealth above the Nisab.

What Assets Are Zakatable?

Include in calculation: - Cash in hand and in bank accounts (savings, current, FDR) - Gold and silver (market value) - Stocks and investment funds (current market value) - Business inventory (value of goods you hold for sale) - Money owed to you that is likely to be repaid

Do NOT include: - Your home (primary residence) - Personal car and household items - Clothes and personal belongings - Business equipment and machinery - Debts you owe to others (subtract from total)

Step-by-Step Calculation

Step 1: Add all your eligible assets (cash, gold value, investments, business stock)

Step 2: Subtract any debts you owe

Step 3: Check if the remainder exceeds your Nisab

Step 4: If yes, calculate 2.5% of the total

Example: - Cash in bank: ৳2,00,000 - Gold (50g × ৳9,500): ৳4,75,000 - Savings bonds: ৳1,00,000 - Less: outstanding loan: -৳50,000 - Net wealth: ৳7,25,000 - Nisab (silver): ৳85,730 ✓ (exceeds) - Zakat due: ৳7,25,000 × 2.5% = ৳18,125

Use WeCloudly's Free Zakat Calculator

Rather than doing this manually, use WeCloudly's Zakat Calculator at [WeCloudly.com](https://wecloudly.com/tools/zakat-calc).

Enter your current gold and silver prices, add each type of asset, and the calculator instantly tells you whether Zakat is due and how much.

The calculator uses the current BPDB-reported gold price and updates the Nisab threshold automatically.

When to Pay Zakat

Zakat should be paid once a year when one lunar year (Hawl) has passed since you first possessed the Nisab amount. Many Muslims choose to pay during Ramadan for added spiritual reward.

Who Receives Zakat?

  1. According to the Quran (9:60), Zakat must be given to eight categories of recipients:
  2. The poor (fuqara)
  3. The needy (masakin)
  4. Zakat administrators
  5. Those whose hearts are to be reconciled
  6. Those in slavery (to free them)
  7. The debt-ridden
  8. In the cause of Allah
  9. Travellers in need

In Bangladesh, you can give Zakat directly to poor families, to trusted Islamic charities, or to local mosques that distribute it properly.
